All the efforts by Japanese was going in vain. They sent excessive amount of men to combat in order to take away the air base from the American troops. Puller and his troops fought Japanese crew for 3 long hours and finally, the enemies gave up. Americans suffered 70 casualties where as Japanese suffered 1400.
The citation if award read, “Courageously withstanding the enemy’s desperate and determined attacks”, adding that the now lieutenant Colonel was “largely responsible for the successful defense of the sector assigned to his troops.”
